Michael Elliot

Bishop Auckland, County Durham

Michael Elliott is a landscape painter whose work captures the raw beauty and atmosphere of Northern England and the Scottish Borders. Initially studying Fine Art at Sunderland University in the late 1990s, he returned to painting during the Covid pandemic, rediscovering a deep connection to the landscapes that have always inspired him.

His work sits between figurative and semi-abstract, focusing on a sense of place rather than direct representation. Often working in series, Elliott explores themes through shifting colour palettes and expressive mark-making. His paintings convey the essence of exposed, untamed landscapes—rolling hills, coastal edges, and the changing northern light.

Elliott’s approach is intuitive, using oil and mixed media to layer texture and depth, bringing movement and emotion to each piece. His work invites the viewer to step into these landscapes, not just as scenes, but as places of memory and experience.

Now exhibiting across Northern England and Scotland, Elliott continues to refine his practice, driven by a lifelong connection to the land and an ongoing exploration of its ever-changing moods.
