Lindsey Tyson

Scarborough, North Yorkshire

Lindsey Tyson is a painter whose work is deeply connected to the landscapes and elemental energy of Yorkshire. Growing up on the North Yorkshire coast, she has always been drawn to the contrasts of land, sea, and sky, as well as the overlooked details of the everyday. From weathered surfaces to unexpected juxtapositions of colour and texture, her eye is drawn to the small moments that others might pass by—double yellow lines against wet tarmac, a flash of moss on stone, or the exhilaration of wind against the sea.

Originally trained as a textile designer, Tyson earned a First-Class BA Honours degree in Textile Design from Derby University in 1990. After more than 30 years in the textile industry, she transitioned fully to painting, embracing a more intuitive and exploratory approach to her work. She mixes media freely, layering texture, surface, light, and form to create compositions that balance restraint with movement. Working with a limited palette, she allows the physicality of the materials to take centre stage, resulting in paintings that are both tactile and expressive.

In 2023, Tyson was awarded the Women in Art, Hampstead School of Art Abstract Painting Prize, marking a significant milestone in her artistic journey. Now working as a full-time painter, she continues to refine her practice, drawn to the tension between control and spontaneity, the structured and the organic.
